Statistical Flesh
The human body dissolved into a distribution of probabilities — weights, vectors, frequencies — and yet still flesh through everything it produces.
The century of vernacular photography accumulated the largest archive of bodies in the history of the species — weddings, baptisms, holidays, Sunday meals. The training corpora of generative models swallowed this willingly photographed flesh and turned the genre of intimacy into a quarry of extraction: the family album now functions as a deposit.
The word “data” is an anaesthetic here. What was ingested is not data, but napes, hands, expression lines, ways of sitting — a collective anatomy, harvested without a scalpel and without consent. Statistical flesh no longer has a name, no biography; it can no longer be pointed at — yet it keeps working. Every generated face is the product of its labour: a flesh that does not tire, does not age and cannot die, because it belongs to no one.
Hence a question aesthetics cannot fully delegate to law: what do we owe those who are present in an image without being there?
