Situational Aura

Walter Benjamin tied the aura to the here and now — to the unique presence of the work in the place where it is — and held that technological reproduction atrophies it. I propose to think the aura not as a property of the object but as a relation.

In its rigorous form, situational aura names the emergent effect of a temporary, unrepeatable configuration between three terms: the object’s material support, its active digital layer, and the participant’s body in the concrete act of activation. None of these terms produces the aura on its own; it appears only from their simultaneous relation and disappears once the configuration dissolves. It is the aura proper to the phygital object, distinct from the Benjaminian aura of the unique original.

The hypothesis shows its force in the generative image too, as a residual aura: the sediment of photographic situations (a kitchen, an afternoon, a hand that raised the phone) that persists as inclinations of an image which no longer has a situation. Benjamin feared that reproduction kills the aura; something stranger happened — generation turned it into a depository.
